The weekend of the 23rd and 24th of September 2006, played host to the inaugural Equal Golden Bean Roaster's Competition in the coastal town of Port Macquarie. The competition was all about the top artisan roaster by exploring their ability to roast the perfect espresso and milk based coffees. Over 78 of the country's 200 plus roasters entered the event in their choice of five categories tested during the course of the weekend.
Because of the large number of number of coffee's to be judged and to preserve the testing palates, 30 judges from the coffee and café industry were invited to participate during the weekend. The judges traveled from all over Australia and were all well versed in the art of cupping.
The overall winner was Campos Coffee, from Sydney. Other category winners were Coffee Alchemy for best filter coffee, Coffee Mama for best retail coffee, Jacques for best milk based, Michels Espresso for number 1 espresso and Crema Gourmet for best organic filter.
The Equal Golden Bean has been a huge success for the coffee industry and the praise for this style of event has been positive. Equal will again support the event in late 2007, to be held in Port Macquarie and will be a four day convention with overseas speakers, workshops, coffee judging and a presentation dinner.
See you there!
